CEO Mike Bontrager shares about our purposes values
View Our Open Positions

Our purposes and values are what define us

At Chatham, we have sought to build a company where our collective common bond around our purposes and values is obvious to our clients, partners, vendors and communities. Our purposes—the reasons for our existence—inspire us to the level of excellence for which we are known. And our values provide guardrails on our journey toward accomplishing our purposes.

Our Purposes

Since our founding, Chatham has embraced a multiple bottom line philosophy that can be best summed up in our company’s recognized five purposes. These purposes articulate why we exist:

Impact our communities and the world. Chatham seeks to combine our time, financial resources, and unique capabilities to better our communities and address global problems.

Impact Chathamites. Chatham seeks to create a vibrant culture in which Chathamites develop and thrive both professionally and personally.

Impact our clients. Chatham seeks to earn each client’s trust and partner with them for mutual success.

Impact markets. Chatham seeks to make the markets we serve fair, safe, and transparent.

Impact purpose-oriented investors. Chatham seeks to provide strong, long-term financial returns to current and future generations of investors who steward our purposes, values, and culture.

Act with honesty and integrity. We strive to align our thoughts, speech and actions so that we do what is right, just and fair, even when no one is looking. We will be honest with each other, with our clients and with ourselves, regardless of the consequences.

Respect each individual. We want to treat each other with respect and dignity. We strive to serve our fellow team members and help them achieve their full potential. We respect that a person’s life outside of work is important.

Do excellent work. We strive to do the best work possible. We believe that good is the enemy of great and will not be satisfied with mediocrity.

Work together. Individual success is best achieved through team success and a focus on ‘we’ rather than ‘me’. We work to accomplish great things together and share information freely.

Build long-term relationships. We always invest in our relationships with our clients, business partners and team members with a long-term perspective in mind. Recognizing that trust is a critical element to any long-term relationship, we seek to earn and develop it with others.

These purposes are the reasons Chatham exists and provide the inspiration for building an organization of like-minded individuals who are driven in both thought and action toward making a difference.

comprise has had an interesting history of sense development. In addition to its original senses, dating from the 15th century, “to include” and “to consist of” ( ), comprise has had since the late 18th century the meaning “to form or constitute” ( ). Since the late 19th century it has also been used in passive constructions with a sense synonymous with one of its original meanings, “to consist of, be composed of”: These later uses are often criticized, but they occur with increasing frequency even in formal speech and edited writing.

Each Sunday night before going to bed, a 51-year-old American software engineer follows an exacting routine to eradicate one grammatical mistake from Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

The phrase in question is "comprised of", against which an editor named Sneakers for Women On Sale White Leather 2017 35 45 55 75 85 Atlantic Stars Cheap Price Outlet Sale ub1HjrWE
– whose real name is Bryan Henderson – has led a one-man war for more than seven years.

Henderson has amassed more than 47,000 edits to the site, a feat that places him among the top 1000 most prolific editors on the English language version of Wikipedia. The encyclopedia attracts about 8 million page views per hour, ranking it among the most popular websites globally.

Since 2007, almost all of Henderson's edits have been to tweak the misuse of "comprised of" by other Wikipedians. In a compelling, 6000 word essay , which ranks among the top Google results for the phrase, Henderson sets out in exacting detail why it should be avoided.

"The phrase 'comprised of' is a poor wording in Wikipedia," his essay begins. "'Composed of' and 'consists of' are good alternatives," he continues. "Not everyone agrees 'comprised of' is wrong, but no one finds it better than the alternatives."

Wikipedia editor and grammar pedant Bryan Henderson, left, and his partner, Chun Xue.

I discovered the work of this remarkably diligent man last year, while working on edits of my first book, Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs .

My book editor had tweaked a single "comprised of" instance from my manuscript, opting to change the verb to "composed". Annoyed, I Googled the phrase in an effort to prove him wrong. It was then that I discovered Henderson's remarkable essay. Impressed, I thanked him on his Talk page, and spoke to him on the phone soon after.

"I'm proud of it," Henderson told me of his multi-year project "It's just fun for me. I'm not doing it to have any impact on the world."

He described how he found the site, became annoyed by its shortcomings, and made his first edit in September 2004. Over time, between working at the office of technology giant IBM in San Jose, California, and living an otherwise quiet life with his partner of 14 years, Chun Xue, Henderson became fixated on eradicating "comprised of" from the site.

His first such edit took place in August 2006 and, by the end of 2007, it was his sole focus, occupyinghim for an hour or so each Sunday night.

His project is not without its opponents. He has been criticised and insulted many times over the years, yet his responses – all archived on his Wikipedia Talk page – are never coloured by the emotion and outrage that his critics pour upon him. Smartly, he never takes the bait.

"I think it really irritates people when I respond unemotionally," he told me with a laugh. "When you're attacked, it's a natural tendency to attack back. I cut through all the insults, to find the meat; if they've asked a question, I answer it."

Wikipedians have a name for editors like Henderson: WikiGnomes . These are contributors who specialise in behind-the-scenes tasks, such as fixing typos and correcting grammar.

Their work is hard to spot, and often thankless. WikiGnomes tend not to seek the spotlight; instead, they're generally happy to toil away at their chosen missions because it gives them pleasure and a sense of achievement.

I cut through all the insults, to find the meat; if they've asked a question, I answer it.
